Overview
The BMW 5 Series has always been a successful model and the new 2009 BMW 5 Series will follow suit. Delivering just about everything a person can ask for in a sports sedan: comfort, convenience, sporty image, and plenty of interior space, the BMW 5 Series has made its mark in the market. The 5 Series is a pleasure to drive with a powerful new engine and first-rate handling. It caters to buyers who want a sporty, fun-to-drive vehicle which is high on utility. The 5 Series wagon's standard all-wheel drive gives buyers a more practical option to a large SUV. The 5 Series comes in 528i, 528xi, 535i, 535xi, 550i trims; ‘x’ after the number indicates all-wheel drive.
Engine and Performance
The 528 trims are equipped with BMW's high-tech magnesium alloy 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that gives 230 hp. The 535 trims get a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine generating 300-hp. The 550i sedan is powered by a 360-hp, 4.8-liter V8 engine. All models are available with a 6-speed manual transmission. The M5 tops the 5 Series line-up powered by a 500-hp 5.0-liter V10 with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed SMG clutch-less manual transmission. The 535i and 550i models have an optional 6-speed automated manual when equipped with the available Sport Package. The automated manuals use a floor shifter or steering-wheel paddles and transmission can be set to shift like an automatic.
Build and Styling
The 2009 BMW 5 Series has a modified front-end with extra wide fenders; the car gets a longer wheelbase which increases rear seat space. A wide track with a lower ride height gives the car its ground-hugging stance making it look almost like a coupe. The polished metal profile of the 5 Series looks sleek with slanting headlights in a curvy front-end, muted rear end, and wrap-around taillights. The interiors are a tasteful combination of wood and leather, luxurious, comfortable, and filled with high-tech features. The 5 Series dash features BMW's double wave theme over the instrument cluster; it is dominated by a center screen that monitors all functions and provides vision for the optional navigation and new night vision systems. The multifunctional iDrive interface integrates entertainment, climate control, and navigation systems. The cabin is roomy, improvements in the rear allow for more shoulder-room and legroom. Increased cabin space puts the 5 Series on par with key competitors. Door panels feature a two-tone finish with leather inserts for 2009. Interior fit and finish is exemplary.

Key features on the 2009 BMW 5 Series include an AM/FM stereo/CD audio system with ten speakers and MP3 capabilities; memory for the driver's seat, side view mirrors, and steering wheel position; ten-way power front seats; power-tilt-telescopic steering wheel; automatic climate control; and keyless entry with multi-function remote controller. Optional features include a sport suspension teamed with run-flat tires; BMW's Active Roll Stabilization; and BMW's Active Steering.
Safety Features
Standard safety equipment includes extended crumple zones; six air bags; antilock brakes; traction and dynamic stability control; BMW Assist with collision notification and optional rear passenger airbags; a head protection system and side-impact airbags for both the front and rear seats; Dynamic Stability Control (DSC); four-wheel antilock disc brakes; and electronic brake proportioning. The 550i comes with Park Distance Control. The BMW 5 Series was named a "Best Pick" in IIHS frontal offset crash testing. BMW Assist emergency and concierge service is also standard.
