Summer is the perfect time to hit the open road and explore new places. Although summertime is a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends, it also brings new challenges for drivers. At BMW of Elmhurst, we want your summer road trip to be safe and fun. Here are our top five tips for safe and fun summer driving.

summer driving1. Check your car before heading out
Summer is the time for road trips, vacations, and long weekends away. But before you hit the open road, there are a few things you need to do to ensure your car is ready for the journey. The most important thing is to check your vehicle’s tire pressure. Under-inflated tires can lead to blowouts, so it’s important to make sure they’re properly inflated before you set off. You should also check your engine oil and coolant levels and make sure the brakes are working properly.

2. Pack an emergency kit
You never know when you’ll need some essential supplies, so it’s always a good idea to pack a summer emergency kit. This should include a first-aid kit, a flashlight, a blanket, snacks, water and a phone charger. If you’re traveling with toddlers, make sure to pack extra diapers and wipes. For long trips, you’ll want to have a set of tools, including a jack and lug wrench, in case of emergencies. And don’t forget to pack your sunblock and sunglasses!

3. Drive during the cooler hours of the day
If possible, avoid driving during the hottest hours of the day. The hotter it is, the harder it is for your car to cool down. This will help you stay safe on the road.

4. Be aware of summer road hazards
Summer is a great time to get out and explore, but it can also be a tricky time to drive. Take care when driving in areas with heavy traffic. Summer is the peak season for road trips, so there can be a lot more cars on the road. This can lead to congestion and dangerous situations.

Be aware of the potential for wildlife collisions. Deer are particularly active during the summer, so be especially vigilant when driving in rural areas.

5. Plan your route and take breaks
When you’re road-tripping during the summer, it’s important to take some time to plan your route. Consider things like rest stops, gas stations, and food options. It’s also a good idea to map out your route in advance, so you’re not distracted while driving.

Plan to take breaks during long drives. Stopping for about 15 minutes every two to three hours will help avoid driver fatigue and keep you safe on the road. Stretch, use the restroom, and get some fresh air—it’ll help make the next leg of your trip much easier.
