Kicking the new year off in style as always, BMW looks primed to continue leading the automotive pack this year, not only in the predictable realms of design and luxury, but also more than ever in the realm of personal technology. Having put some serious energy into continuing to develop some recent pioneering additions to the BMW dashboard, among other things, the company recently exhibited a handful of fascinating new designs and onboard technologies at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The showcase comes as part of BMW’s Vision project, a series of next-generation concept vehicles that BMW has been using to practically demonstrate many of its upcoming innovations. Now, with the show all wrapped up, we’ve got all the details on the amazing new control system that’s got fans and critics alike looking forward to a new era of interactive dashboard technology.

Continuing what it began with the basic but groundbreaking first-generation gesture-control system that it presented at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show and which is now incorporated into the current BMW 7 Series, the company has now officially revealed the next stage of development and capability for this truly futuristic project. Now, it’s finally looking like ‘hands-on’ is ready to become a thing of the past, at least in situations when it isn’t truly necessary or when it can cause a dangerous distraction. Officially dubbed AirTouch, the new system improves the abilities of the first generation design in allowing drivers to take even more control without having to actually touch a screen, knob, or button.

Currently, the first-generation Gesture Control system allows drivers to control things like answering a call or adjusting stereo volume with simple hand movements, which still makes a world of difference in freeing their attentions for more important tasks. With this increasingly intelligent motion-sensing technology in place, drivers have an even wider variety of systems at their disposal with a language of gestures that is newly detailed, but still decidedly intuitive and straightforward. Drivers can now look forward to a technology that allows them an incomparable engagement with both freedom of control and peace of mind on the road.

Naturally, it comes as no surprise to us that BMW is leading the charge for the timely integration of a game-changing accessory, one that we think is very likely to become a standard necessity sooner than later. In the spirit of progress and evolution, BMW continues to substantiate a deserved reputation for forward-thinking design, and you can definitely count on 2016 being a very good year for more of the company’s leading innovations!
