BMW recently announced the updated 2021 5 Series Sedan. The seventh-generation 5 Series gets interior and exterior design improvements, as well as enhanced technology and aerodynamics. In addition, there’s a new 48-volt mild hybrid system. At BMW of Elmhurst, it’s gratifying to see the inroads BMW continues to make in both performance and technology.

2021 BMW 5 Series SedanThe 2021 BMW 5 Series roster includes the:

  • 248 hp 530i and 530i xDrive Sedans
  • 288 hp 530e and 530e xDrive PHEV Sedans
  • 335 hp 540i and 540i xDrive Sedans
  • 523 hp M550i xDrive Sedan

On the outside, the BMW 5 Series gets fresher styling, with a new grille design, complete with restyled headlamps that are slimmer than the previous year. The vehicle is now 1.2-inches longer, adding to its sweeping profile.

New standard trapezoidal tailpipe finishers highlight the rear of the 5 Series, while new taillights feature three-dimensional lenses and black edging.

Inside, drivers will appreciate the 2021 5 Series Sedan’s Live Cockpit Professional, which features iDrive 7, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, and a 12.3-inch digital central touchscreen control display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. All models also get standard Sport seats (M Multi-contour seats on M550i xDrive) and a 40/20/40 split folding rear seat.

The new mild hybrid system features a 48-volt starter-generator that enhances performance, and provides improved efficiency and even more driving comfort in the six-cylinder BMW 5 Series. The system can charge the 48-volt battery from the generator while the vehicle is driving at a constant speed. This method of generating electricity is only deployed when the battery has a low charge, at times when it won’t affect engine efficiency.

The new 2021 BMW 5 Series will offer a choice of standard non-metallic and optional metallic paint colors. The M550i xDrive gets standard metallic paint, with two optional individual metallic colors.
