BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition

Recently, BMW let everyone know about its plans at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March, to deliver special editions of the company’s well-received i8 vehicle. Well, the first of these new i8 editions has been announced, and, we have got to tell you, it is quite gorgeous. That is to say, BMW will unveil at this year’s Geneva Motor Show the gorgeous i8 Protonic Red Limited Edition. Now, back when it was officially launched on the auto market in the Untied States in August of 2014, the BMW i8 was already building a foundation for success, to which it certainly did not disappoint, selling approximately 3,000 units by December of 2015.

Of course, as is implied by the name, this new special edition of the i8 will sport a fancy new paint job that BMW is calling “Protonic Red.” However, that is not all. Added to the sleek new red paint job, the Protonic Red Edition i8 will also boast some stunning Frozen Grey Metallic accents (this color, unlike Protonic Red, is actually available on the regular production model of the i8), which appear stunningly on the vehicle’s side skirts, around the rear fascia, and on the kidney grille. As far as the Protonic Red Edition i8’s wheels are concerned, the vehicle proudly displays a set of W-spoke 470, light-alloy wheels that are themselves finished in Orbit Grey Metallic and with their hubs painted in Aluminum Matt.

Under the hood—and, of course, this is not surprising—the Protonic Red Edition i8 is a standard model. That is, the vehicle uses the same 1.5-liter, three-cylinder, gasoline engine and synchronous motor that can be found in the regular, off the lot version of the BMW i8. The turbocharged vehicle pushes roughly 228 horsepower and 236 pounds-feet of torque, while the electric motor generates 129 horsepower and about 184 pounds-feet of torque. Total, that gives us around 357 horsepower and about 420 pounds-feet of torque, which ensures that the i8 can go from 0 to 60 in about 4.3 seconds. The vehicle also ensures that drivers and passengers can travel approximately 372 miles on both gasoline and electric power (as well as approximately 22 miles on only electricity).

BMW is no stranger to rolling out special editions of its i8 model. That is to say, back in 2014 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, BMW also created a special edition model of the vehicle (named after the event itself) that was auctioned off for a whopping $825,000. This new Protonic Red Edition, however, as BMW has stated, will fetch closer to the original i8price.
