BMW Performance Lovers, Brace Yourselves for a Great 2016!

It isn’t too often that we get a new taste of BMW’s talent for serious power and performance, and even less often off the racetrack, but recently there’s been quite a buzz amping up about a new BMW project that aims to do just that. Looking to satisfy some of those frustrated consumer desires for more availability of the kind of work that BMW regularly puts to work in the racing garage, the company is said to be bringing an all-new M Performance model to the most recent iteration of the classic 7 Series. Anytime is a good time for a new M, if you ask us!

Currently being referred to pre-emptively as the M760i, the first speculations about the new model’s details take a bit of a cue from the configuration of BMW’s recent high-performance, limited edition F01/F02 760Li, which in 2013 presented the company’s most powerful commercial displacement engine under its hood, a 6.0-liter V12 Twin Turbo pushing a serious 535 horsepower with over 550 lb.-ft. of torque. Adding to the mystery and excitement however, unnamed industry sources have revealed to automotive media that there are some new, game-changing plans on the table for BMW’s upcoming takes on high-performance consumer automobiles.

In fact, company sources have even teased at the possibility of two separate new 760i models for 2016, which, if current rumors are true, may very well be destined to offer two separate takes on a 6.6-liter, V12 Rolls Royce engine. If the Rolls Royce models that offer similar engines can be taken as an early indicator, then the details spell out the strong possibility of both a new near-600-horsepower 760i and a truly dominating M760i with even more punch. Those familiar with BMW performance models won’t be surprised by a most likely eight-speed automatic gearbox putting things in arm’s reach.

As the development of the classic BMW 7 Series has made transformation a central part of its enduring style through its near-40 years as BMW’s flagship, it’s reasonably expected that these standout models will also bring an updated attention to detail to bear in terms of stepping up the 7 Series’ visual style game. As with many M Performance entries, an overall ‘sportier’ image is definitely in order, but exactly where BMW plans to take its new project, we’ll just have to wait and see.
