BMW Uses AI to Increase Paint Shop Quality – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

A pilot project in the paint shop of the BMW Group’s Munich plant has shown that artificial intelligence (AI) can bring even more precision to the most sensitive automotive production systems. At BMW of Elmhurst, we’re constantly surprised and impressed at the level of innovation BMW demonstrates time and time again.

The project attempted to solve the problem created by dust particles settling onto vehicles during the painting process. Although the automaker uses cutting-edge technology to filter out fine dust particles, the concentration of these particles can sometimes exceed acceptable levels. The wet paint may trap the dust particles, visibly affecting the surface of the vehicle’s paint quality.

That’s where artificial intelligence comes in. AI specialists have found a solution to the dust particle problem. Newly painted cars must undergo an automatic surface inspection at the automaker’s paint shop. During the inspection process, the specialists gather data to produce a database used to analyze the dust particles. AI algorithms are applied that allows the specialists to compare live data from dust particle sensors with the database.

“Data-based solutions help us secure and further extend our stringent quality requirements to the benefit of our customers,” explained Albin Dirndorfer, Senior Vice President Painted Body, Finish and Surface at the BMW Group. “Smart data analytics and AI serve as key decision-making aids for our team when it comes to developing process improvements.” According to Dirndorfer, BMW has filed for a number of patents related to this advanced dust particle analysis technology.

If the level of dust rises due to the season or during protracted dry periods, the algorithm can recommend early filter replacement. At the end of the pilot program, the automaker is confident the AI system can be rolled out to its other automotive plants.
