September 9th, 2022 by

The Elmhurst Art Museum’s 25th Anniversary year closes with Sentrock: The Boy Who Wanted to Fly. This exhibition starts today, Sept. 9, and runs through Jan. 15, 2023. If you’re not familiar with Sentrock (real name: Joseph Perez), he’s a Chicago-based street artist who’s taking the art world by storm. The exhibition at the Elmhurst Art Museum is his first solo museum show. Visitors can discover the origin story of Sentrock’s Bird City Saint character, which adorns several murals throughout Chicago. Here at BMW of Elmhurst, we’re grateful the museum presents the work of so many talented local artists.

Sentrock: The Boy Who Wanted to FlySentrock: The Boy Who Wanted to Fly is a multimedia presentation that spills into several galleries. It features paintings, a new mural, works on paper, a ten-foot-tall sculpture, a life-size birdhouse installation, and animated video projections.

Sentrock considers the colorful murals he creates a way to show gratitude for his community. According to the artist, the mask worn by his signature Bird City Saint reflects an individual’s hope and strength.

Giving back to the Latinx community is important to Sentrock. He’s participated in clothing and food drives and mentoring projects. He has worked with organizations, including the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bulls, and Apple. His murals have been commissioned by National Geographic, the Chicago Design Museum, the City of Chicago, Chicago Public Libraries, Chicago Fire and more.

This exhibit features accompanying programs, including a conversation with the artist, a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, family day workshops, and a special pop-up shop.
