Founded in 1999 by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the Chicago Immigrant Orchestra provides a platform for immigrant musicians to showcase their immense talent. Despite a hiatus in 2004, the orchestra re-launched in 2019 under the leadership of Fareed Haque and Wanees Zarour. Their combined expertise and experience have propelled the orchestra to new heights, culminating in a critically acclaimed virtual performance in September 2020.

Fareed Haque is a true master of the guitar, renowned for his innovative approach and fearless experimentation with various musical styles. His collaboration with Goran Ivanovic received widespread acclaim. Wanees Zarour brings his in-depth knowledge of Middle Eastern music to the table, showcasing his skill as a composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist. His leadership of the Middle East Music Ensemble at the University of Chicago has further solidified his reputation as an exceptional musician.

Under Haque and Zarour’s guidance, the Chicago Immigrant Orchestra continues to produce awe-inspiring new musical pieces that blend a variety of global musical traditions.
