Culture Club: Wales – BMW of Elmhurst

Visit the Elmhurst Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 10:30 a.m. for Culture Club: Wales. During this hybrid event, world traveler John Lynn will talk about his 250-mile walk through Wales, where he trekked from Cardiff to Conwy. You’ll learn about the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons, the Pembrokeshire Coast, the Wye Valley, the Cardigan Bay, Snowdonia and more! You’ll discover the country’s history and scenery and discover the green hills, pleasant valleys, and friendly villages. At BMW of Elmhurst, we admit to being curious about Wales. Culture Club: WalesHere are a few fun facts about Wales to get you started before you attend Culture Club: Wales.

1. Wales has many castles.
Wales has more castles per square mile than any other country in the world. Caerphilly, the country’s largest castle, rivals any castle in Europe in size.

2. Don’t try to pronounce the names of Welsh towns.
The Welsh village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is the world’s second-longest-place name. Don’t even think about trying to pronounce it.

3. Mount Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales.
Mount Snowdon is the country’s highest mountain, at 13,560 feet.

4. The national sport of Wales is rugby.
The Welsh are crazy for rugby. The first international rugby game took place between Wales and England in 1881. They have been fierce rivals ever since.

5. Saint Patrick was Welsh.
Saint Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint, was Welsh. He was a resident of Banwen in the Dulais Valley. He was captured by Irish pirates when he was about sixteen and taken to Ireland as a slave, where he later became a missionary.

6. The world’s first radio message was sent from Wales.
The world’s first radio message sent by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897 took a 3-mile journey from Larvernock Point, south of Penarth, Wales, to Flat Holm in the Bristol Channel.

7. Wales is full of sheep.
Wales has 3.1 million people and approximately 10 million sheep. That’s more than three sheep for every person.
