Discover Chicago Architecture: Burnham, Mies, Gang, and Their Legacies – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

Join the Elmhurst Public Library on Dec. 7, 2021, at 7 p.m. as it presents Chicago Architecture: Burnham, Mies, Gang, and Their Legacies. You’ll learn about the stories and secrets behind Chicago architects and their buildings. Chicago is an important center of modern architecture. This presentation will cover the start of the First School to the most current architectural marvels. At BMW of Elmhurst, we appreciate the informative and entertaining lectures offered by the Elmhurst Public Library, and we hope you can attend.

At Chicago Architecture: Burnham, Mies, Gang, and Their Legacies, historian Clarence Goodman will cover the most significant Chicago architects and explore their legacies. After the event, participants are invited to view a short video of Elmhurst’s McCormick House, designed by Mies van der Rohe. The McCormick House is now part of Elmhurst Art Museum.

Daniel Hudson Burnham (1846-1912) was an architect and urban designer who was called “the most successful power broker the American architectural profession has ever produced.” He was chosen as Director of works for the 1892–93 World’s Columbian Exposition (known as “The White City”). In addition to working on the Plan of Chicago, he also designed other celebrated buildings, including New York City’s Flatiron Building and London’s Selfridges department store.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is considered one of the pioneers of modernist architecture. He was the last director of the Bauhaus school in the 1930s, eventually heading the architecture school at Chicago’s Armour Institute of Technology (later known as the Illinois Institute of Technology).

Jeanne Gang (born 1964) grew up in Belvidere, Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1986 and a Master of Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1993. She has received numerous awards, including Woman Architect of the Year by the Architectural Review. Gang is currently a Professor in Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
