The Elmhurst Public library presents Chicago: An Illustrated Timeline on May 31, 2022, at 7 p.m. Author and Chicago tour guide Ellen Shubart will lead you through a visual journey through the history of the Windy City, from its indigenous beginnings to its development into a vibrant metropolis. Chicago is one of the most iconic and historically significant cities in the United States. The most widely accepted meaning of the city’s name is that it comes from a word in the Algonquin language: shikaakwa, meaning “striped skunk,” a term they applied to the wild garlic that grew on the banks of the local lakes and streams. The area was inhabited by the Miami, Sauk, Fox and Potawatomi tribes long before the first Europeans arrived.

In 1673, a French explorer named Louis Joliet and a Catholic priest named Jacques Marquette were the first Europeans to explore the area. They were followed soon after by British traders and settlers. The early French settlers were drawn to the area because of its fur trade, and Chicago quickly became an important outpost in the Midwest.

On August 12, 1833, the City of Chicago was founded by trader and land speculator John Kinzie and landowner William Butler. The City of Chicago prospered in its early years due to its location at the intersection of several major waterways and its access to valuable natural resources. The city’s population rapidly grew and soon became one of the most important commercial hubs in the United States.

Today, the City of Chicago is home to over 2.7 million residents. It’s one of the most important cultural and economic centers in the world. Though it’s often referred to as the “Second City,” Chicago is the third most populated city in the United States, and it’s constantly growing. Its metropolitan area is home to over 10 million people, making it one of the largest in the world.
