You’ll get a fascinating look into the basics of music theory at Music Theory for Songwriters. This virtual class is presented by the Elmhurst Public Library on Friday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. Led by professional musician Julian Velard, the course is perfect for aspiring musicians, songwriters and everyone who loves music. Velard’s informative presentation will cover song structures, chord progressions, intervals, voice leading and much more. Julian Velard is a pianist, singer-songwriter and composer known for his melodic tunes and comedic timing. He has been popular in the music and comedy fields here in the United States and has attracted a cult following in the U.K. and Netherlands. The music world first recognized Velard’s talents nearly a decade ago, and he’s remained a prominent fixture in the industry ever since.

Velard has written music for commercials, pop musicians and corporations such as Audible, Buzzfeed and Wix.com. He’s toured as an opening act for several renowned musicians, including Paul Carrack, Jamie Cullum and Goldfrapp. He has also performed with a wide range of comedians such as Will Ferrell, Jack McBrayer, Paul Scheer and Reggie Watts.
