Discover Nature’s Blueprints at the Art Museum – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

There’s still time to see Nature’s Blueprints: Biomimicry in Art and Design. You can visit this family-friendly exhibit through Aug. 14, 2022, at the Elmhurst Art Museum. This installation consists of several interactive stations where participants can learn about how we have been inspired by nature’s designs. Nature’s Blueprints examines biomimicry and explores the ways it can help us innovate in areas such as art and design. At BMW of Elmhurst, we appreciate the many offerings of the Elmhurst Art Museum. We know this will be an exciting and informative exhibit.

According to the Biomimicry Institute, biomimicry is “an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies.” Put more succinctly, biomimicry uses natural solutions to solve problems in human engineering. The Nature’s Blueprints exhibit includes 12 sensory stations that use touch, sound and interactive games to observe how art and design have been influenced by nature. Some examples include how bird and bat wings influenced early attempts at flight, how burrs led to the development of Velcro, and how suspension bridges were informed by spiderwebs.

Nature’s Blueprints: Biomimicry in Art and Design also includes an installation by Alicia Ponce. She’s an architect based in Chicago and founder and principal of the firm APMonarch. This exhibition investigates how Ponce’s architectural design was influenced by natural forms, processes and patterns. In addition, two other museum exhibitions complement the show. The McCormick House features a solo show by Chicago artist Raúl Ortiz, whose art is inspired by color, pattern, nature and architecture. The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Summer Members Show is also currently on view at the museum.
