Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer
Chicagoland residents worth their salt know Chicago’s famous food mainstays: pizza, hot dogs, and Italian beef. You’ll learn about the origins of these tasty dishes and others when you visit the Elmhurst History Museum’s exhibit, Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods. This exhibit runs through Oct. 2, 2022. At BMW of Elmhurst, we’re still deciding whether Italian beef should be ordered wet or dry. You might find the answer at this new exhibit.
Eat Your Heart Out: Iconic Chicagoland Foods will also explore the history of some of the most esteemed Chicago food traditions. You’ll learn about the proprietors and restaurants in the local restaurant trade, including Lou Malnati’s, Portillo’s, Vienna Beef and more. You’ll discover the origins of the famed five-tiered Rainbow Cone. Kids can play at an interactive food service station, and everyone can vote for their Chicago food favorites.
Here are some examples of Chicago’s most iconic foods:
- Pizza: Chicago’s deep-dish pizza has bragging rights as being the best in the country. With its thick crust, tomato sauce, and a generous layer of cheese, there’s nothing quite like it.
- Hot Dogs: Chicago-style hot dogs start with a Vienna beef hot dog bathed in water. Add a steamed poppyseed bun, mustard, green relish, spicy sport peppers, chopped white onions, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices and celery salt, and you have a combination that can’t be beat. Just don’t put ketchup on your dog!
- Italian Beef: The Italian beef Chicago sandwich is known far and wide for its thinly sliced and seasoned roast beef on a crusty Italian roll. Choose your peppers and au jus sauce, and dig in!
