Enjoy the EAG’s Engaging Frida – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

See the works of local artists inspired by Frida Kahlo at Engaging Frida, an exhibit sponsored by the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild from July 11 until Aug. 21, 2021. This juried event will feature 45 pieces of artwork in various mediums. At BMW of Elmhurst, we appreciate the talent of local artists, and we’re looking forward to this joyful celebration of Kahlo’s influential work.

The Engaging Frida exhibit will be held in the EAG Gallery, located in the Elmhurst Art Musuem, and is free to the public. An opening reception with tacos, tamales, beer and wine will be held on July 16 from 6:30-9 p.m. Special guests will speak about Kahlo’s life, art, traditional clothing and hometown. Abstract artist Heidi Becker will be the guest judge and announce the awards at 8 p.m.

Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Born in Mexico City, she began painting after being severely injured in a bus crash at the age of 18. She was known for her many self-portraits and use of bold colors. Her work explored the themes of feminism, gender, identity, class, race and chronic pain.

Kahlo married fellow artist Diego Rivera in 1929, and her paintings were exhibited in New York City, Paris and Mexico before her death in 1954. However, she didn’t become an international icon until art historians and political activists rediscovered her work in the late 1970s.

Date and Time:
Engaging Frida runs from July 11 through Aug. 21, 2021, during regular museum hours. The opening reception will be held on July 16, 2021, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
