Enjoy The Nutcracker Virtually – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

While we may not be able to attend live holiday performances in person this year, the Chicago School of Ballet offers the opportunity to watch virtually. Their presentation of The Nutcracker will be streamed for two virtual performances on Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Attendees can watch the event live on the school’s YouTube channel. The first performance of The Nutcracker was held in 1892 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Marius Petipa and Leve Ivanov choreographed the original performance, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the score. The libretto was adapted from “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E. T. A. Hoffmann. While the original production was unsuccessful, the work has become increasingly popular since the 1960s and is now one of the Christmas season’s most beloved ballet productions.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in 1840. The Russian composer was the first to make an enduring impression around the world. Tchaikovsky’s score for The Nutcracker has become one of his most famous works and is noted for its use of the celesta, an orchestral percussion instrument resembling a small upright piano. In 1884, Tchaikovsky was honored by Tsar Alexander III, who awarded him a lifetime pension.

The Chicago School of Ballet is based in Bloomington, with students attending from all over the suburbs. Director Steven Norman had a 26-year ballet career at Houston Ballet and The San Francisco Ballet. The School welcomes dancers of all levels who want to further their dancing skills in a professional environment.
