August 31st, 2021 by

Awesome AustraliaTake a journey to the Land Down Under with Culture Club: Awesome Australia, presented by the Elmhurst Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. During this event, world traveler Brian Michalski will share stories and original photographs of his 10-month backpacking adventure across Australia. At BMW of Elmhurst, we think this will be a captivating presentation. We’re happy the library provides quality programming for the community to enjoy.

Michalski, who calls himself the Mindful Vagabond, is an educator who seeks to inspire budding world travelers of all ages. In May 2015, he embarked on an epic 22-month tour of 20 countries, including Australia. His Awesome Australia presentation will include fascinating details about his experiences in the Australian Outback, the Great Barrier Reef and Tasmania. It will also provide information on the nation’s history, traditions, urban lifestyle, deadly wildlife and Aboriginal influences.

Australia is filled with amazing landscapes, plants, animals and cultures. While it is a relatively new country, founded in 1788, Aboriginal people have inhabited the region for over 50,000 years. Here are a few interesting facts about the Land Down Under:

  • It’s the smallest, driest and flattest continent in the world.
  • It’s the only continent without an active volcano, which leads to a lack of nutrients in its soil.
  • It was founded by British prisoners who were sent there as punishment.
  • There are twice as many kangaroos living there as people.
  • An Aussie man is credited with inventing the term “selfie” in 2002.
  • Tasmania, an island 150 miles off the Australian coast, has the world’s cleanest air.

So, grab some Vegemite, put the shrimp on the barbie, and get ready for this awesome adventure!
