Experience York Drama’s Presentation of The Laramie Project – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

York Drama presents its 2021 Winter Production, The Laramie Project as an on-demand streaming event on March 26-28 and April 4-5, 2021. Since live theater is currently on hold, York has decided to offer this drama as a film. At BMW of Elmhurst, we appreciate the remarkably talented young people in our community. The Laramie Project is a play written by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project. Developed in 2000, the play addresses the reaction to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming. The murder was decried as a hate crime. It focused awareness on the lack of hate crime laws in different states, including Wyoming.

The three-act play is based on interviews with the town’s residents conducted by members of the theatre company, published news reports, and journal entries by the company members. Eight actors portray over sixty characters in a series of short scenes.

The Laramie Project premiered in February 2000 at The Ricketson Theatre, performed by the Denver Center Theatre Company. It was subsequently performed at the Union Square Theatre in New York City, followed by a performance in Laramie, Wyoming in 2002. In the following years, The Laramie Project was performed at community theaters, colleges and high schools throughout the United States. It has been performed at professional playhouses around the world.

Notable actors and actresses who have performed in The Laramie Project include Laura Linney, Peter Fonda, Camryn Manheim, Cyndi Lauper, Christina Ricci, Judith Light and Stockard Channing.
