Explore Domestic Space at Jan Tichy: Reflectance – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

February 10th, 2022 by

Jan Tichy: Reflectance is an experiential art installation that takes place in McCormick House at the Elmhurst Art Museum through May 29, 2022. It explores the home’s domestic space as “an environment of movement, light, activity and wonder.” The exhibition emphasizes solar explorations, responding to the McCormick House’s architectural elements and south-facing window, using different found objects, photographic materials, and electronic and mechanical components. The installation is designed to illustrate McCormick House as an interactive structure, not merely as an art object in a museum. At BMW of Elmhurst, we believe Jan Tichy: Reflectance will be an intriguing and delightful exhibition.

Jan Tichy: ReflectanceJan Tichy’s work embraces photography, audio, architecture, sculpture and video. Many of his works intermix these different elements. Tichy uses video projections as a source of light based on time, creating physical and mental spaces to investigate themes that include obscurity, concealment, and what is seen and unseen. His photographic sensibilities are informed by his minimalist and formal visual language. The results are installations with narratives open to the viewer’s interpretation.

Tichy was born in Prague and moved to Israel in the mid-1990s. He attended The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he studied political science. Later, he studied photography at Musrara School of Photography in Jerusalem, followed by advanced studies in art at Bezalel Academy in Tel Aviv. Tichy moved to Chicago in 2007, earning an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Tichy has had one-person exhibitions at the Center for Contemporary Art-Tel Aviv, the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art and Spertus Museum in Chicago. His work has been part of exhibitions throughout the world, including Barcelona, Berlin, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Jerusalem, New York, Paris, Portland, Prague, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Venice and Washington, D.C. His art is part of collections in art museums across the globe, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
