Explore Mars at Roving the Red Planet – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

Join the Elmhurst Public Library as it presents Roving the Red Planet on Monday, Feb. 1. 2021, at 7 p.m. This Zoom event will transport you virtually to our planetary neighbor, and you’ll discover fascinating facts and explore the Martian surface. At BMW of Elmhurst, we’re looking forward to this event, another entry in a series of exciting presentations the library continues to provide to our community.

You might be surprised to know that there are six American spacecraft either on the surface of Mars or orbiting the red planet. We’re anticipating the landing of the new Perseverance rover on Feb. 18. This rover is part of the Mars 2020 mission. Its main tasks are looking for signs of ancient life and bringing rock and soil samples back to Earth.

Michelle Nichols, the host of Roving the Red Planet, will explain what this robotic fleet has taught us. You’ll discover the history of Mars exploration. Michelle Nichols is Director of Public Observing at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, where she has worked since 1995. She leads all of the Planetarium’s observatory, telescope, and public sky observing activities and events. She has also served as an advisor for several children’s books, including the Scholastic News Nonfiction Readers series. Her first book, Astronomy Lab for Kids, was published in 2016.

Nichols holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National-Louis University.

Roving the Red Planet is appropriate for adults and children grades 6-12.
