Free beginner swing dancing classesThe free beginner swing dancing classes are split into four sessions with breaks. You don’t have to have experience, and bringing a partner isn’t necessary. All ages are welcome to attend.

West Coast Swing is a lead-follow partner dance with roots in the Lindy Hop. This dance enjoyed popularity during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Los Angeles ballroom dancer and instructor Dean Collins was instrumental in developing this dance on the West Coast. It gained popularity in San Diego, and soon, people all over the United States were dancing West Coast Swing.

West Coast Swing dancing isn’t strictly choreographed like some other dance forms. It has an improvisational element, so there isn’t just one way to do it. Dancers are encouraged to develop their own personal style within the basic structure of the dance. In addition, West Coast Swing dancing isn’t limited to one kind of music. It can be danced to a variety of musical genres, from blues and country to hip-hop and R&B.

Here’s some West Coast Swing trivia: In 1988, West Coast Swing was named California’s state dance.
