Be sure to check out the Elmhurst Art Museum’s Virtual Exhibition Tour: Wright vs. Mies on Nov. 11 from 7-8 p.m. This virtual event will take you through the Museum’s Wright Before the Lloyd” exhibit. A virtual tour of the Museum’s historic McCormick House uncovers the story of the feud that developed between architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe over architecture aesthetics and design. At BMW of Elmhurst, we’re grateful for the Elmhurst Art Museum’s exhibitions and events, particularly during the current COVID situation.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was an architect, designer, writer and educator. He was a founder of organic architecture, which aimed to create architectural forms in harmony with humanity and the environment. In 1991, Wright was recognized as “the greatest American architect of all time” by the American Institute of Architects.

Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is considered to be one of the pioneers of modernist architecture. He was the last director of the Bauhaus, an important school in modern architecture. He emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1944, where he headed the architecture school at Chicago’s Armour Institute of Technology.

The Virtual Exhibition Tour: Wright vs. Mies will explore the differing views of these two architectural luminaries, who were frequently at odds with each other. When Mies was appointed director of architecture at the Armour Institute of Technology, Wright quipped, “But for me there would have been no Mies — certainly none here tonight” and left the room. From that moment on, each group’s followers treated the other camp with scorn.
