Glaze a Tile at the Glazing Workshop with Mike Tauber – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

June 2nd, 2021 by

Join celebrated ceramic artist and York HS alumni Mike Tauber in a fun glazing workshop on Monday, June 7, or Tuesday, June 8. You’ll create a completed 8×4-inch ceramic tile. Mike will teach step-by-step methods of tracing and creating a wax line drawing. Then you’ll apply non-toxic, low-fire glazes to glaze the tile. The tires will be fired in a kiln and distributed at a later date. At BMW of Elmhurst, we’re glad to see artists from the area giving back to the community. If you’d like to try your hand at creating a ceramic tile, this will be a great opportunity.

The art of making and decorating tiles dates back thousands of years. Tiles were used to protect and decorate the walls in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, and they’re still used today. In the 20th century, tiles were influenced by the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. These tiles, created between 1900 and 1940, are now sought-after collectors’ items.

Instructor Mike Tauber is a professional artist who lives in Laguna Beach, California. He works in paint, ceramic tile and cement relief. Mike’s figurative and landscape tiles have been displayed at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California and can be seen throughout Laguna Beach. His largest public tile mural measures 130 feet. Mike was named Artist of the Year in Laguna Beach in 2018. He exhibits every year at the city’s world-famous Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters.
