If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about Native American history and culture, you’ll want to attend Journeying Through the American Indian Way of Life on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the Elmhurst History Museum Education Center. This immersive, engaging presentation features Award-winning Ojibwa author Kim Sigafus McIver discussing the American Indian way of life as it once was. At BMW of Elmhurst, we believe this will be an incredibly informative program that’s great for all ages. We hope you have a chance to attend.
Featuring storytelling, songs, and drumming, Journeying Through the American Indian Way of Life will take audiences through the history of the tribes that once inhabited Illinois. In addition, McIver will bring to life the traditional Native customs and culture that flourished before the enforcement of the Indian Removal Act. This program is supported by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars program.
The Ojibwe are an Anishinaabe people currently spread across southern Canada, the northern Midwestern United States, and the Northern Plains. The Ojibwe people are one of the largest tribal populations and are well-known for their birchbark canoes and scrolls. In the long history of the tribe, the Ojibwe have seen their ancestral lands colonized in exchange for compensation and other guarantees of traditional rights. Despite being removed from their homeland, the Ojibwa people have passed down spiritual beliefs and rituals through oral traditions.
Kim Sigafus McIver is an internationally published Ojibwa author and speaker. McIver publishes across several genres, including Native American children’s picture books and young adult fiction. She frequently travels throughout the Midwest presenting Native American educational programs.
