Listen and Learn at the Lyric Opera Lecture: Macbeth – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

Explore the story, music and composer behind the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s thrilling season opener at the Lyric Opera Lecture: Macbeth, a lecture hosted by the Elmhurst Public Library on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021, at 3 p.m. This in-person presentation will help attendees broaden their understanding of Verdi’s Macbeth, the inaugural production of Lyric Music Director Enrique Mazzola. At BMW of Elmhurst, we think this will be a fascinating discussion for opera buffs.

By Italian composer Guiseppe Verdi, Macbeth is an operatic take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy of the same name. Through a series of riveting arias, duets and ensembles, it tells the tale of a power-hungry couple who will stop at nothing to capture the Scottish crown. The stunning opera is considered one of Verdi’s greatest masterpieces.

To open its 67th season, the Lyric Opera is bringing a brand-new version of Verdi’s Macbeth to Chicago from Sept. 17 to Oct. 9, 2021. Created by acclaimed Scottish director Sir David McVicar and Scottish set designer John Macfarlane, this production brings Shakespeare’s haunting story and Verdi’s soaring music to unforgettable life. The opera stars bass-baritone Craig Colclough as Macbeth, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky as Lady Macbeth, tenor Joshua Guerrero as Macduff, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Banco. Costume design is by Moritz Junge, with lighting design by David Finn and choreography by Andrew George. Performances will be sung in Italian with English translations projected over the stage.

During the Lyric Opera Lecture: Macbeth, one of Lyric’s docents will provide background details about this exciting production and play highlights from Verdi’s score.
