Lyric Opera Lecture: ErnaniBased on an 1830 play by Victor Hugo, Ernani is presented in four acts. If you’re unfamiliar with this opera, here’s a quick rundown of the story. Don Juan of Aragon has lost his title and wealth during a civil war. He takes the name Ernani and leads a band of outlaws in the mountains. He loves the beautiful Elvira, but she has two other admirers: her uncle and the King of Spain. The opera features energetic arias and ensembles that are uniquely Verdi’s.

Ernani was initially performed on March 9, 1844. The opera was an instant success. It was Verdi’s most popular opera until the composer’s “Il trovatore” was performed in 1853. In 1904, Ernani became the first opera to be recorded in its entirety. It’s still presented by opera comapanies today.

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was an Italian composer best known for his operas. He was born near the town of Busseto and received a musical education with the sponsorship of a local patron. He was the foremost composer of his time in the Italian opera scene.
