Lyric Opera Lecture: Hansel and Gretel – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

Composed by Engelbert Humperdinck in 1893, the opera “Hansel and Gretel” is a musical retelling of the classic fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm. It tells the story of Hansel and Gretel, two siblings who find themselves lost in the woods. They stumble upon a gingerbread house owned by a cunning witch. The witch lures the children with delicious treats, intending to fatten them up and eat them. However, Hansel and Gretel outwit the witch, thanks to a wise sandman’s guidance and a guardian angel’s protection. Together, they manage to escape and find their way back home.

“Hansel and Gretel” is renowned for its delightful music, including the beloved aria “Evening Prayer.” The opera was originally written in German, but it has been adapted and translated into several languages, making it a universal favorite performed across the globe. The timelessness of this classic opera continues to captivate audiences of all ages, making it a must-see for opera enthusiasts.

Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer best known for his opera “Hansel and Gretel.” Born in 1854, Humperdinck studied in Frankfurt and later in Munich, where he was influenced by the works of Wagner. He composed several operas and other works throughout his career, but “Hansel and Gretel” is considered his masterpiece. Humperdinck’s use of folk music and his attention to detail in creating realistic characters have made “Hansel and Gretel” a beloved and enduring work in the operatic repertoire. Humperdinck died in 1921.
