Lyric Opera Lecture: Le Compte OryLe Comte Ory is a comic opera that tells the story of Countess Adèle, who is left alone in her castle after her brother and his men head off to fight in the Crusades. Count Ory takes advantage of this situation and uses every trick he can think of to gain entrance to the castle and win the countess’s affection.

The Lyric Opera’s performance features bel canto tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Count Ory. Coloratura soprano Kathryn Lewek plays the role of Countess Adèle.

Le Comte Ory was Rossini’s final comedy. It premiered on Aug. 20, 1828, by Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier. It was followed by a performance at the King’s Theatre in London in 1829. Since then, the opera has been performed by opera companies around the world.

Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was an Italian composer known for his operas, especially comic operas. His father was a trumpeter, and his mother was a singer, so he was exposed to the theater at an early age. His most famous works include The Barber of Seville, The Italian Girl in Algiers, The Lady Of The Lake, and The Thieving Magpie.
