Meet Author and Illustrator Don Tate – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer
Children from kindergarten through 8th grade will appreciate the opportunity to meet author and illustrator Don Tate. Presented by the Elmhurst Public Library, the talk will feature Tate’s experiences writing, illustrating and publishing his work. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions. This free event will be held live on Zoom. At BMW of Elmhurst, we’re glad the library has so many entertaining and informative virtual events for children in the community.
Don Tate often writes about historical figures who endured during the period of American slavery. He is the author of many award-winning picture book biographies. He has illustrated over 80 critically acclaimed trade and educational books for young readers. Some of the books he’s written include “Poet: The Remarkable Story of George Moses Horton,” “Strong as Sandow: How Eugen Sandow Became the Strongest Man on Earth,” and “It Jes’ Happened: When Bill Traylor Started to Draw.” The latter, a biography of folk artist Bill Traylor, a former slave, received numerous awards.
Tate’s illustrations appear in “Carter Reads the Newspaper,” “Whoosh! Lonnie Johnson’s Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions,” and “No Small Potatoes: Junius G. Groves and His Kingdom in Kansas.” “William Still and His Freedom Stories: Father of the Underground Railroad” is an upcoming title written and illustrated by Tate. A soon-to-be-released title he illustrated is entitled “The Slam-Dunking, Alley-Ooping, High-Flying Harlem Globetrotters” written by Suzanne Slade.
He has also written short stories for middle-grade students, and he enjoys presenting at schools, conferences and literary festivals. Tate is the founding host of The Brown Bookshelf, a blog devoted to promoting literature for young people written by black authors.
