Stoned Right Out of My Mind: Seven Other Dwarfs – BMW of Elmhurst

There’s still time to catch Stoned Right Out of My Mind: Seven Other Dwarfs, Selected Works by Ted Strandt over the next two weeks. Running through April 29, 2022, at the Elmhurst Art Museum, this collection explores Strandt’s connection to his ancestral Danish heritage as a “stenhugger,” or stonecutter. At BMW of Elmhurst, we’re excited to see this cultural representation on display and commend the museum for its compelling exhibits.

Strandt says the show is where his “work, art, and life come together.” He is a fourth-generation Danish stonecutter and cites his grandmother and mother as early artistic influences in his life. On a trip to Denmark, Strandt visited his ancestral farm in Skellerup, where several generations of his Danish family once lived and worked.

The idea for Stoned Right Out of My Mind was born when Strandt visited the Jelling stones, massive carved runestones dating back to the 10th century. The older of the two Jelling stones was raised by King Gorm the Old, the last pagan king of Denmark, in memory of his wife, Thyra. The other stone was raised by King Gorm’s son, Harald Bluetooth, in memory of his parents and in celebration of his conquest of Denmark and conversion of the Danes to Christianity. Strandt felt a special connection to the stones and how their centuries-old history related to the creation of Denmark.

At Stoned Right Out of My Mind, visitors will see a collection of hand-carved, miniature statues depicting Danish figures and celebrated icons. This collection is perfect for families, art lovers, and everyone interested in exploring a shared cultural connection.

The exhibit runs through April 29, 2022 during regular museum hours. The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday.
