The Elmhurst Art Museum is home to the iconic McCormick House, designed in 1952 by renowned architect Mies van der Rohe. In the 1930s, Mies served as the last director of the Bauhaus, a revolutionary German school of modernist art, design, and architecture. However, with the rise of Nazism and its opposition to modernism, Mies emigrated to the United States. He accepted the position as head of the architecture school at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He continued to influence architecture through his innovative designs.
