Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Will Stir Your Soul – Elmhurst BMW Dealer

November 6th, 2019 by

The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra continues its 59th season with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” on Sunday, Nov. 10. The performance takes place at the Elmhurst Reformed Church at 3 p.m. and will be conducted by Stephen Alltop, ESO’s Music Director and Conductor. This is a chance to see a great performance of this classical masterpiece, so if you love classical music, we at Elmhurst BMW recommend that you don’t miss it.

Tchaikovsky's PathétiqueThe concert will feature brother-and-sister violinists Joshua and Isabella Brown. Joshua Brown has won several awards, including the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra Stanger Audition and the Mozart International Competition. Isabella Brown recently received the third-place slot in the Cooper International Competition. In addition to Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique, the ESO will also perform Dvorak’s “Romance in F minor for Violin and Orchestra” and Prokofiev’s “Concerto for Violin no 2 in G minor, Op. 63.”

Written in 1893, Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74,” also known as the “Pathétique Symphony,” is the composer’s final completed symphony. Tchaikovsky called the symphony “The Passionate Symphony,” but the Russian word for “passionate” was mistranslated into French as pathétique, which means “solemn.” The symphony is one of the most expressive and moving works ever written.

The audience is invited to a discussion before the performance, entitled “Behind the Music Stand,” led by Ted Hatmaker. The talk begins at 1:45 p.m.

The concert is underwritten by gifts from Loretta Kalina, Darlene Van Meir and Raita Vilnins. The 59th season of the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra is made possible in part by grants from 90.9FM WDCB, the City of Elmhurst, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, and the Illinois Arts Council.
