The Civilian Conservation Corps in Elmhurst – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

Elmhurst History Museum’s Curator of Collections, Dan Lund, will lead a virtual presentation entitled The Civilian Conservation Corps in Elmhurst. The pre-recorded talk will be available from Feb. 11 through May 2, 2021. The presentation will look at the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Lund will cover the goals and legacy of the CCC, the New Deal-era federal program created to provide work for young men in the 1930s. The focus will be on local projects like Camp Elmhurst, which was located in our area from 1934-35. At BMW of Elmhurst, we believe this will be an excellent opportunity to look at a page in our community’s history. We encourage you to attend virtually.

Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of his New Deal Program. The CCC helped the United States recover from the Great Depression. Beginning in 1933, the CCC gave single men between the ages of 18 and 25 the opportunity to engage in work programs to improve parks, forests, and other public lands in the country.

Many men considered the prospect of three meals and a bed ample reason to enroll in the CCC program. They would earn $30 a month, although most of the money was sent directly to their families. Those enrolled in the program also had the opportunity to further their education, with many receiving their high school diploma while serving.

The Civilian Conservation Corps in Elmhurst is presented by Dan Lund. He has been the Elmhurst History Museum’s Curator of Collections since 2017. He manages and curates the museum’s collection of over 20,000 artifacts, photos and historically significant objects. Lund contributes to the museum’s many exhibits and provides reference services to the community.
