The Great Depression was a global economic downturn that started in 1929 and lasted for the next ten years. It was the longest and most severe depression the Western world had ever experienced. The Great Depression was a catalyst that changed the country’s economic theories and policies. Although it began in the United States, the Great Depression caused drastic decreases in output, serious unemployment, and severe deflation in nearly every country in the world. The Great Depression’s Impact on Chicagoland will detail how our area was affected by this momentous time, which was the greatest hardship Americans endured since the Civil War.
Dominic A. Pacyga is professor emeritus of history at Columbia College Chicago’s Department of Humanities, History, and Social Sciences. He has had several books published by the University of Chicago Press, including “Chicago: A Biography,” “Industrial Chicago: Workers on the South Side, 1880–1922” and “Slaughterhouse: Chicago’s Union Stock Yard and the World It Made.” Pacyga received the 2014 Mieczyslaw Haiman Award for exceptional and sustained contribution to the study of Polish Americans. He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1981.
