View Houses of Tomorrow at the Elmhurst Art Museum – BMW of Elmhurst Dealer

The Elmhurst Art Museum celebrates its 25th anniversary and kicks off its spring season with Houses of Tomorrow: Solar Homes from Keck to Today, an exhibition that runs through May 29, 2022. This presentation is centered around the season’s architectural theme. Here at BMW of Elmhurst, we’re grateful for the wonderful exhibitions and programs the art museum offers. Houses of TomorrowGeorge Fred Keck created the country’s first glass house for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. His groundbreaking House of Tomorrow was built over 15 years before steel and glass structures were popular with modernists like Mies van der Rohe. Along with his brother William, Keck built hundreds of houses in the Midwest, incorporating passive solar energy and innovative construction methods that pre-date today’s approaches to sustainable building.

Attendees at the 1933 World’s Fair were fascinated by the futuristic concept of Keck’s glass House of Tomorrow. The home provided a look at several new technologies, such as a personal airplane hangar and the first GE dishwasher. The innovations in solar energy displayed in the House of Tomorrow led the Keck brothers to make further breakthroughs.

Houses of Tomorrow: Solar Homes from Keck to Today concentrates on the building’s use of solar energy. A special gallery focuses on the Keck brothers’ mid-century solar homes. There’s also an exhibition by artist Jan Tichy that explores glass and light. Visitors can view the winning designs of last year’s passive solar energy competition.
