Relive the excitement of NASA’s Apollo 10 lunar mission with the To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA. This exhibit at the Elmhurst History Museum runs from May 14 through August 20, 2021. The touring exhibit, organized by California’s Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, reveals the unique role Snoopy played in the May 1969 Apollo 10 flight, which was a test rehearsal for the historic Apollo 11 moon landing two months later. To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASAA year before the Apollo 10 launch in 1969, NASA approached Snoopy creator Charles Schulz about using the iconic beagle as its safety mascot. With Schulz’s blessing, the agency introduced the Silver Snoopy Award program to increase safety awareness among NASA employees and contractors. The program was a huge success, and NASA astronauts and employees still follow it to this day.

Using vintage Peanuts comic strips and collectibles, official NASA photographs, video footage, posters and more, To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA will show visitors how Snoopy and other Peanuts characters helped support NASA’s Manned Flight Awareness safety program. Visitors will also learn about Chicago area astronauts, including Apollo 10 lunar module pilot Eugene Cernan. Everyone will have the opportunity to train like an astronaut at the outdoor Astronauts Training Academy course.

  • Sunday, Tuesday through Friday: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The museum is closed Mondays.
